Cultural statistics for the pandemic year

With the "Pocket Statistics on Culture in Switzerland", the Federal Office of Culture (FOC) provides statistical information on culture in Switzerland. This year's edition focuses on the 2020 reporting year and traces the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has had and continues to have on the cultural sector.

For example, there was a decline in the number of cultural professionals (-4.7 percent in 2020), a drop in cinema admissions by around two thirds and a fall in museum admissions by around half compared to the previous year. In contrast, there has been an increased interest in digital cultural activities such as streaming films, short-term increases in eBook and games sales during store closures and a significant increase in visits to historical monuments and the use of cultural assets.

This varied, albeit not yet complete, picture is supplemented by an overview of the financial measures taken by the federal government and cantons in the first phase to cushion the economic impact of the cultural sector.

The special edition of the "Pocket Statistics on Culture in Switzerland" is published in all four national languages. It can be downloaded free of charge from the website of the Federal Office of Culture and will also be available in printed form from the end of September. Printed copies can be ordered on request.
