City of Bern tests youth culture allowance
With the introduction of the city-wide cultural strategy, the city of Bern is giving children's and youth culture a whole new emphasis. It wants to support individual projects such as a hip-hop battle or the establishment of a recording studio with a youth culture lump sum.
Since the beginning of 2018, a wide range of cultural activities in the school and leisure sector have been brought together under the new term Children and Youth Culture City of Bern. The two most important innovations at the moment are the newly appointed expert commission for children and youth culture and the introduction of the "Startstutz" youth allowance.
The specialist commission set up in March decides on the allocation of funds in the area of children and youth culture and can set specific priorities here. This applies to both school and extracurricular activities. It is made up of artists from various artistic disciplines such as music, dance, theater, film, literature and visual arts, as well as representatives of the urban cultural scene, socioculture and the City of Bern's youth parliament.
The "Startstutz" youth culture lump sum is a new grant from the City of Bern for youth cultural activities outside of school. The aim is to provide easy access to funding and thus enable the implementation of a wide range of cultural projects. Teenagers and young adults up to the age of 25 are given the opportunity to realize their ideas without any pressure to succeed and without a lot of administrative work.
The youth culture lump sum can be used to support individual projects such as a fashion show by young designers, a hip-hop battle, setting up a recording studio, a youth event at the Graffiti meeting center, a breakdance festival, a film or photography project. Young people can tackle and implement projects from all artistic disciplines. Startstutz" can also be applied for to print posters, hire event venues or equipment and so on.
