Second expansion stage of the Rheinau monastery island
The first stage of the new use of the Rheinau monastery island was completed in 2014 with the inauguration of the music center. Next Monday, construction work will begin on the second stage, which will see the conversion of premises for home economics courses and catering.
A restaurant with 80 seats and 150 seats is planned on the Rhine terrace. The gastronomy concept only envisages a summer restaurant, as demand is estimated to be low in the winter months. The restaurant operator should be found by summer 2016.
As part of the construction work, the so-called Mühlesaal will also be restored. It will serve as a banqueting hall for weddings held in the Spitz or Bergkirche, as well as for club events, lectures and celebrations of all kinds.
The utilization concept for the monastery island approved by the Zurich cantonal government in 2009 envisaged the operation of a music center, two home economics classes at secondary schools (HWM), a catering section and a museum. In the course of work on the preliminary project, it became clear that it would not be possible to build the music center and the infrastructure for the HWM at the same time. They will therefore be developed in stages.
