Music education is taking up more and more space

The German Orchestra Association (DOV) has presented its latest concert statistics. The number of music education events in particular rose sharply: In the 2013/14 season, there were 4160 concerts and music education events for children and young people in Germany.

According to Gerald Mertens, Managing Director of the DOV, this is 94 percent more than ten years ago and 10.8 percent more than in the last survey.

At around 12,300 events, the total number of concerts on offer in the 2013/14 season was down slightly by around two percent compared to the 2011/12 season. By contrast, the number of chamber concerts rose from 1212 to 1257. Overall, there was a shift from symphony concerts to more events for children and young people.

The reports from concert halls and orchestras on their capacity utilization have recently been positive. However, there are no comprehensive attendance statistics in Germany. For this reason, visitors to many classical open airs, music festivals, church concerts and classical cross-over concerts by commercial providers have not yet been recorded.
