"Demo of the Year" for Giulia Dabalà

m4music has chosen the best songs by Swiss newcomers in the Demotape Clinic. The main prize goes to Giulia Dabalà from Neuchâtel, while Geneva rapper Chien Bleu, the krautrock band Yet No Yokai from Lucerne and electro artist Casanora from Bern also receive awards.

The award for the "Demo of the Year" 2020, endowed with CHF 5,000 and donated by the Fondation Suisa, goes to War Drums by Giulia Dabalà (NE). "Dabalà shows great potential and ability with an exciting arrangement, intricate percussive elements and her characterful voice," says Jennifer Jans, musician, festival organizer and jury member.

844 demos from all over Switzerland were submitted for the Demotape Clinic 2020. 60 songs, divided into the categories urban, electronic, pop and rock, made it to the shortlist and were judged by a jury of experts - based on coronavirus in the digital space. The winners can look forward to a "Fondation Suisa Award" for the most outstanding song in each category and prize money of CHF 3,000:

  • Urban: Chien Bleu (GE) for Azure
  • Electronic: Casanora (BE) for Learn how to fly this dragon
  • Pop: Giulia Dabalà (NE) for War Drums
  • Rock: Yet No Yokai (LU) for Fahrenheit

With the Demotape Clinic, the Migros Culture Percentage has been specifically promoting young talent in the Swiss pop music scene since 1999. It is considered one of the most important competitions for up-and-coming talent in Switzerland and has brought to light artists such as Cobee Quiet Island, Audio Dope, Pedestrians, Muthoni Drummer Queen and Steff la Cheffe.

The 24th edition of m4music will take place in Zurich from March 25 to 27, 2021.
