Orchestra concert - Zurich Chamber Orchestra and Avi Avital
In the 18th century, the mandolin experienced its heyday on the European music scene. Composers such as Giovanni Paisiello and Emanuele Barbella placed the instrument at the center of their works. Paisiello combined Italian virtuosity with French elegance in his Concerto in E flat major, thus shaping the mandolin sound of his era. Barbella, who like Paisiello was born in Naples, left behind an impressive work with his D major concerto, whose expressive middle movement continues to inspire to this day.
More recently, Avi Avital, one of the world's leading mandolinists, has revitalized the instrument. As the first mandolinist to be nominated for a Grammy, he inspires with virtuosity, passion and a diverse repertoire. Together with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble of international standing, which is celebrated for its stylistic range and precision under the direction of Daniel Hope, he demonstrates the versatility of the mandolin. The chamber orchestra combines tradition with innovation and is one of the most important ensembles in Europe. Together, Avital and the ensemble create a fascinating interplay that allows the mandolin to shine in a new light.
