"We are all 'on the move' from the first day of our lives: as soon as we are catapulted into this universe, we are on a continuous journey, in constant flux.
This program is a small reflection on being on the road: We begin with Luigi Boccherini's Musica Notturna from 1780, a symbolic journey through nocturnal Madrid. We then go back two decades into the bright daylight of Joseph Haydn's rarely performed G major Cello Concerto.
This is followed by a big leap to the central work, the String Quartet No. 3 by Alfred Schnittke. Atonality, neoclassicism, biting depiction of the contemporary, but also remarkable homages to tradition: quotes from Orlando di Lasso, Beethoven and Shostakovich can be heard in it.
In between, arrangements of selected pieces from J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier can be heard. Bach's reputation as the father of Western classical music is not unfounded: His music is considered a foundation for us musicians and at the same time represents one of the greatest challenges. Many of us rack our brains over Bach, even if we have already played his music countless times.
All these pieces signify a recurring homecoming on the journey through life and through time."
