2nd SMG Study Day

On September 24, the 2nd SMG Study Day will take place at the Musicology Department of the University of Basel.

Helen Gebhart - This event is intended to be a showcase for young music researchers in Switzerland and offers young scientists the opportunity to network with each other, discuss musicological topics and meet new people in science. At the end of the conference, the Marta Walter Prize for young researchers will be awarded.

The promotion of young talent in music research is a major concern of the SMG and this study day is intended to contribute to the networking of people in musicology in Switzerland. Following the successful introduction of the Study Day in Bern in 2020 with 50 participants, the SMG is once again organizing a conference dedicated to the promotion of young researchers. The Study Day consists of a poster exhibition, a symposium, the awarding of the Marta Walter Prize and a lavish aperitif.

The event offers young researchers in Switzerland the opportunity to present their projects in the field of music research and to make contacts with each other. The study day, which is held every two years, is taking place in Basel this year and will continue to travel to various regions of Switzerland in the coming years.

Announcement for the study day

The study day begins with a symposium at which scientific projects, work and findings can be presented in various formats.

On the one hand, a 20-minute presentation can be given. In order to enable a musical-performative presentation in addition to the oral and visual presentation of the results, the format of a lecture-recital, also lasting twenty minutes, is now also offered. The symposium will also include a poster exhibition. In this format, scientific topics can be presented in the form of an A0 poster. The production costs for the posters will be covered in full by the SMG. On June 17, 2022, the SMG will offer a workshop on designing a scientific poster at the University of Bern. The call for applications for the study day is aimed at all Bachelor's and Master's students, doctoral students and young postdocs from Swiss universities and music academies who would like to present a scientific topic.

Interested persons who would like to present a scientific paper in the form of a poster, present it in a lecture/lecture recital and discuss the findings with the audience can register their project idea or topic with the SMG office by June 12, 2022.

Marta Walter Prize

The study day on September 24 will culminate in the awarding of the Marta Walter Prize, formerly known as the Handschin Prize. Since 2009, the Swiss Music Research Society has been awarding the prize for young academics, which is endowed with prize money.

Interested people have been able to apply directly to the SMG office since 2014. The prize has now been awarded six times, most recently to musicologist Laura Decurtins and musicologist Raphael Rennicke for their dissertations. Until 2020, the prize for young musicologists was named after the musicologist Jacques Handschin. In 2020, the SMG Board of Directors decided to rename the prize after Marta Walter to honor the Swiss musicologist who provided the financial basis for the prize with her generous legacy to the SMG.

Marta Walter (1896-1961) was a long-standing member of the SMG and one of the first music researchers in Switzerland. She studied singing in Basel and Geneva and worked for many years with the Basel musicologist Wilhelm Merian. She worked as a music correspondent for the Basler Nachrichten, wrote about concerts in Basel's musical life and reported on her research findings in the feuilleton.

After her death, a selection of her articles was published in the collection Miszellen zur Musikgeschichte (1967). Texts such as "Musikalische Seltenheiten der Universitätsbibliothek Basel", "Die Schriftgiesserei Haas und der Notendruck" and "Die Wanderschaft eines Kuhreihens" reflect her wide-ranging research interests. By renaming the prize, the SMG wishes to pay tribute to this important music researcher. After the presentation of the Marta Walter Prize 2022, all participants are invited to a hearty aperitif.
