Born in 1951, Rudolf Lutz is a pianist, organist, harpsichordist, composer, conductor and improviser. Until 2013, he was organist at the St. Laurenzen Protestant Church in St. Gallen and until 2008 he directed the Bach Choir St. Gallen. His many years as a lecturer have included teaching positions at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (improvisation), the Hochschule für Musik Basel (basso continuo) and the Musikhochschule Zürich (oratorio studies).

With its award, the University of Zurich is also paying particular tribute to Lutz's complete performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's vocal works. He is the musical director of this complete performance by the J. S. Bach Foundation St. Gallen - a task he has fulfilled since 2006. Rudolf Lutz has been a member of the board of directors of the Neue Bachgesellschaft e. V. Leipzig since 2016.
