After studying in Berlin and Tübingen and working at various universities in Italy, Germany and Switzerland, Walther Dürr became a managing member of the editorial board of the New Schubert Edition in Tübingen in 1965.

According to the Schubertiade, his work focused on the volumes containing all of Franz Schubert's songs, which could be described as his central life's work; however, he was also responsible for other groups of works. He retired in 1997, but continued to work as a member of the editorial board and as an editor for the New Schubert Edition.

The Schubertiade "mourns the loss of a companion who was closely associated with it from the very beginning as a musicological advisor, author of program booklet contributions and participant in panel discussions". The funeral will take place on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Bergfriedhof cemetery in Tübingen.
