Mainz University merges humanities
The pressure on orchid subjects is increasing at German universities: in Mainz, an Institute for Art History and Musicology (IKM) with the somewhat bizarre subject combination of Art History, Musicology, Christian Archaeology and Byzantine Art History is officially inaugurated.
After a year of setting up and settling in, the professors and staff of the Institute of Art History and Musicology (IKM) will officially inaugurate it with a loose series of short lectures under the eloquent title "Under the wing of the phoenix". The event will take place on October 28 in the Georg Forster building on the university campus.
The institute has been in existence at Faculty 07: History and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) since October last year. It emerged from the merger of previously independent institutes and departments. Similar mergers are under discussion at other German universities.
