Since 2003, a work has been commissioned every two years from a world-renowned personality as part of the "Roche Commissions". The choice was made by Roche at the suggestion of the Lucerne Festival Artistic Director. Thomas Adès follows Rebecca Saunders and Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Chen Yi, Hanspeter Kyburz, George Benjamin, Toshio Hosokawa, Matthias Pintscher, Unsuk Chin, Olga Neuwirth and Peter Eötvös.

The Roche Young Commissions will also be awarded this summer and traditionally go to two talented young composers. Hovik Sardaryan and David Moliner have been selected to develop and rehearse their works together with the Artistic Director of the Academy, Wolfgang Rihm, and musicians from the Academy network in 2022 and then premiere them at the 2023 Summer Festival.
