Death of the singer and cultural manager Jakob Stämpfli

The singer, music teacher and former director of the Bern Conservatory Jakob Stämpfli has died in Thun at the age of 80, according to an obituary in the Bernese newspapers.

Jakob Stämpfli studied singing in Bern and Frankfurt am Main. From 1954, he gave concerts throughout Europe, the USA and Japan, working with conductors such as Ansermet, Boulez, Frühbeck de Burgos, Richter, Rilling and many others. He has been the recording director for numerous record productions. He has received several German Record Critics' Awards and the Grand Prix du disque eight times.

Stämpfli taught at the Biel Conservatory from 1960 to 1962 and at the Bern Conservatory from 1963. For almost 30 years he also taught at the music academies in Saarbrücken, Hamburg and Essen. In recognition of his outstanding artistic achievements, he was awarded the title of professor ad personam by the Saarland government in 1965.

Stämpfli was also director of the Thun Region Music School from 1973 to 1992. In 1992, he was elected Director of the Conservatory for Music and Theater in Bern. As President of the Swiss Music Council, the Association des Professeurs de chant de Suisse, the Swiss Music Teachers Association, the Johannes Brahms Society Switzerland and as a board member of the European Voice Teachers Association, he was also active in music policy.
