Patricia Kopatchinskaja honored with a Grammy

It is only the fourth Grammy to go to Switzerland: Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, who lives in Bern, wins it together with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra for the album "Death & The Maiden".

"Death & The Maiden" is a concept album released on the Alpha label. At its center is an orchestral version of Schubert's string quartet D 810 "Death and the Maiden", created especially for the project. The violinist has developed a program that takes into account various aspects of death in music, such as the tradition of the medieval dance of death or the music of the double murderer Gesualdo. She has also integrated contemporary music by György Kurtág.

There has never been a classical Grammy for Switzerland before. In 1987, the harpist Andreas Vollenweider, who belongs more to the world and pop genre, received the award, in 1990 the organist and folk musicologist Marcel Cellier received the award and in 2017 the relatively unknown Swiss-Lichtenstein producer Al Walser received the award as part of a team award.
