"From the New World" - Nostalgia IV - Gstaad Festival Orchestra I
Today, it seems hard to imagine that just a few centuries ago, large parts of the world were completely undiscovered. Driven by unstoppable curiosity, courageous explorers tracked down "new" worlds piece by piece. Antonín Dvořák must have had a similar experience when he set foot on American soil for the first time in 1892: he was to be the director of the newly founded National Conservatory in New York. During his three-year stay in America, he composed some of his most famous works, including the monumental Ninth Symphony, for which Dvořák drew his inspiration from the rich traditions of the New World - in particular from Negro spirituals and Native American songs. Nevertheless, the (possibly even unconscious?) longing for his Bohemian homeland can be heard again and again. For this year's first concert with the Gstaad Festival Orchestra, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla has put together an exciting program of contrasts: She takes the audience on a journey to another "new" part of the world, namely southern America, which is the central pivotal point in Gabriela Montero's Latin Concerto. The work by the Venezuelan pianist and composer, written in 2016, aims to break with the usual stereotypes and, as she herself says, offers a "chiaroscuro view" of the Latin American continent, i.e. an observation using strong contrasts to show that "not everything shines golden beyond rhythms, charm and sensuality".
