In addition to Hanover and Mannheim, the Unesco Cities of Music are Seville, Bologna, Glasgow, Ghent, Bogota, Brazzaville and Hamamatsu.

Members of the network are so-called centers of excellence in one of seven areas: film, music, design, gastronomy, media art, crafts or literature. They support each other through cooperation and pass on their experience to other creative cities or metropolitan areas, especially in developing countries.

According to its own characterization, the network supports cities in using their creative potential for urban development. There are no Swiss cities in the network.
