New study regulations at the University of Zurich

In future, studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Zurich (UZH) will consist of one or two study programs. From 2017, students will choose a combination of a major and a minor study program.

As a result of the change, Bachelor's programs worth 30 ETCS points will be discontinued, as will Master's programs worth 15 or 105 ETCS points from spring semester 2019. The media release from the university quotes Andreas H. Jucker, Dean of the Faculty, as saying that this will not change the disciplinary diversity of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. All disciplines will continue to be offered, including the smaller ones. A temporary exception will be made for the four study programs Latin, Greek, Medieval Latin and Romansh. These could still be studied as 30-point programs at Bachelor level for the time being.

The 180 ETCS points for a Bachelor's degree can be achieved in a so-called major and minor study program (120 and 60 ETCS points). The 120 ETCS points for a Master's degree can be achieved in a major and minor study program (90 and 30 ETCS points) or in a study program with 120 ETCS points.

In order to prepare for the change to "Bologna 2020", first-year students will already be studying in this new structure from spring semester 2017. The same will apply from spring semester 2019 for students starting a Master's degree course. The current study of one major subject with two minor subjects or two major subjects will then no longer be offered. Master's students will also only be able to study one program.

With this new study structure, UZH is aligning itself with Swiss and international universities. Nothing will change for all students enrolled until spring 2017 or 2019. They will be able to continue studying their degree programs in the existing form until the spring semester of 2022.
