New piano festival in Lucerne
Pianist Igor Levit is curating a new piano festival for Lucerne Festival from May 18 to 21, 2023, which will bridge the gap between classical music and jazz and between notation and improvisation.
For the four-day festival, Levit will bring Alexei Volodin, Anna Vinnitskaya, Fred Hersch and Johanna Summer to the KKL stage. According to the Lucerne Festival press release, the overall concept of the seven concerts is "based on the principle of interaction". The coexistence of notated and improvised music, classical and jazz, discipline and freedom is important.
From 1998 to 2019, Lucerne Festival organized a piano festival every autumn. It combined classical recitals with off-stage performances by international jazz pianists and generated around 10,000 admissions each year.
